Every Thursday at 9 a.m., a group of volunteers gathers at First United Methodist Church of Springtown, ready to take its place on a well-oiled assembly line as they prepare for their weekly role in the Snack Pack Ministry.
The Snack Pack Ministry is a church-led program that launched in 2011 dedicated to providing weekly “packs” of ready-to-eat meals for area students to take home. Each school year Snack Pack coordinators, such as Larry Van Zile, partner with local school counselors to identify students and their families who may need extra food support.
“The counselors tell us, now, if they found that there's a family that needs it, they'll let us know we can make adjustments, and we can do that,” he said.
