Residents sound off on rezoning of land
Commercial or residential?
Resident Joseph Martin approaches council members in opposition of a property rezoning during a Dec. 18 city council meeting.

City council members met Thursday, Dec. 18, to discuss a possible zoning change — giving citizens the floor in a public hearing to discuss their concerns over a property on Old Springtown Road.

The property subject to the discussion is a 1.401 tract of land located at 528 Old Springtown Road whose owner requested a zoning change from a single-family residential to a general commercial use property. During the hearing, residents raised several concerns such as increased traffic, property values and the impact on the neighborhood.

Assistant City Administrator/City Secretary Christina Derr confirmed that after the initial notice, several responses from property owners were sent in and although they were not present, Derr took a moment to share some of those responses. Many statements Derr read reflected a common theme among residents — the need to protect the quality of life in an area many have called home for years.
