LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Cold and Chunky

Cold and Chunky

Oh my! Already I can’t take any more cold,

Because today all I have done is eat.

If this cold snap lasts many more days,

My belly will grow till I can’t see my feet.

It’s way too blustery to go outside;

I’m trapped in the house, and it’s a bore.

I’ve been back and forth to the kitchen so much,

I’ve worn a trail in the tile floor.

Wolfed down some cereal for breakfast,

Then before lunch, some in-between snacks.

I can’t stay out of our pantry —

For food, I just keep going back.

Grilled cheese and soup made up my lunch,

Then more snacks slipped in after that.

Then stuffing myself with a loaded baked potato,

I’m getting entirely too fat.

Debbie actually made the comment,

“You have been eating all day!”

But currently, I can’t seem to stop —

I just keep putting the groceries away.

This is just the first day of being

Trapped and sheltered in place.

If it lasts three or four more days,

I’ll be bigger than our house has space.

I spent hundreds of dollars on food and snacks

Because they said we’d need to stay in.

I didn’t know after the very first day

I’d need to go to the store again.

I’m going to blame it on my body,

Starving for calories to keep me warm.

Maybe just a little lie to myself

Won’t cause me too much harm.

I’ve got to close this poem

And go take an antacid or two,

Because I spotted some Cheetos earlier,

And before bed, I may have just a few.
