Springtown High School wrestler Dominic Contreras has qualified for the USA Wrestling National Freestyle Championships, set for July 9-18 inside the Fargo Dome in Fargo, North Dakota. Contreras will compete in the 16U division at one of the nation’s premier offseason wrestling events.
The USA Wrestling Nationals, commonly referred to simply as “Fargo,” annually attracts many of the top high school wrestlers from across the country and is considered one of the toughest tournaments in amateur wrestling.
Springtown head wrestling coach Sawyer Cooper said the accomplishment reflects years of dedication and commitment to the sport.
“Opportunities like this don’t happen by accident,” Cooper said. “They come from years of hard work, dedication, sacrifice and commitment to being the best. Fargo is one of the biggest stages in high school wrestling.”
Contreras is coming off an impressive high school season for the Porcupines. He placed third at the UIL Region 1-5A Wrestling Tournament to qualify for the UIL State Wrestling Championships, helping continue the growth and success of the Springtown wrestling program.
Freestyle wrestling differs from the traditional folkstyle format used during the Texas high school season, placing a greater emphasis on exposure points and upper-body scoring techniques. Competing at Fargo gives athletes an opportunity to test themselves against elite national competition while also gaining valuable experience heading into the next high school season.
Contreras will now spend the summer preparing for the national tournament as he represents Springtown on the national stage.
