The rise in the number of active shootings in recent years has law enforcement agencies looking for ways to be better prepared to save lives — and it’s no different in Springtown.
On May 13, at a Springtown city council meeting, Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Shane Harris and Parker County Hospital District Marketing Director Blake Rexroat presented the idea of school resource officers having a “medical go bag” during the citizen forum portion of the meeting. Harris talked about how in 2002, Texas State University along with the San Marcus Police Department implemented a training called A.L.E.R.T. which stands for “Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.”
“What it boils down to, it’s for an active shooter,” Harris said. “Fast forward to May 24, 2022, a sad day in Texas. An 18-year-old young man entered Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, fatally shooting 19 students, two teachers and wounding an additional 17 individuals.”
