The city of Springtown hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the city’s Veterans Memorial Park at Lake Drive and Walnut Creek Drive. While Memorial Day kicks off the summer season, it serves as a reminder to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. Springtown Mayor Mike Kelley kicked off the ceremony, speaking about the significance of why so many gathered on the sacred day.
“Despite all our imperfections, this is still the greatest country in the world,” Kelley said. “We’re honored to live here. I appreciate the opportunity to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of our great nation.”
Kelley asked all those who served or are currently serving in the armed forces to stand to be honored with applause. Springtown City Administrator David Miller led the invocation. The Parker County Young Marines posted the colors while Christian Ortega and Leah Stern led the audience in the pledge of allegiance. Shannon Copeland Veazey sang the national anthem. The city asked gold star mother Rhonda McRae, who lost her son to a roadside bomb in Iraq in July 2007, to give the wreath presentation.
