Council considers changes to animal control ordinance

The Springtown City Council considered new city ordinances and changes to existing city ordinances in Chapter 2 of the Springtown Code of Ordinances, which governs animal regulations, at a May city council meeting. Over the last several months, Springtown city staff has worked on proposed amendments to the city’s animal control ordinance. The staff asked for more feedback on these proposed items and then will come back to present the council with more revised versions.

The state’s minimum requirement for an Animal Shelter Advisory Board is that it include an animal control officer, veterinarian, elected official and any welfare organization. Staff offered alternatives including no changes or additional positions at council pleasure. The council must keep at least the current four positions. If the council would like to increase the number of elected officials on the board, they should appoint no more than two elected officials to the board to avoid possible Texas Open Meetings Act violations in relation to their council positions.
