Springtown officer’s actions save man who suffered ‘widowmaker’

Springtown police officer Leia Beavers was recognized for her quick actions and delivery of emergency care to a man who had suffered a heart attack — the dreaded “widowmaker.” Beavers, who was presented with the Life Saving Award during a Springtown City Council meeting Aug. 19, spoke about how proud she felt and how grateful she is support from her partner, friends and family.

About 3 a.m. July 23, a Springtown couple, Chase Spangler and his wife Makella Spangler, woke up suddenly when Chase began to make strange noises. He got up, looking dazed and panicked, and passed out, crashing into their closet door. Makella called 911 and realized he was experiencing a heart attack. A 911 dispatcher talked Makella through the process of performing CPR on Chase, which she did for eight to 10 minutes.
