SHS has a long-standing tradition of lighting the letters during homecoming week, a symbol that has ignited school spirit for generations. Years ago, when the school only offered agricultural vocational classes, welding was included as a component of those courses. While there wasn’t a dedicated welding class at the time, students still contributed by building the steel letters used in the ceremony. The steel letters were made to be reused each year, but even strong materials wear down over time.
This year, students in Welding II, made up of juniors and seniors, took on the challenge of building a brand-new set of letters as part of one of their class projects. The freshly crafted letters made their debut in this year’s lighting ceremony, continuing the tradition with a new generation of craftsmanship.
The students built the letters in just three days, using their 90-minute class periods to complete the project.
