A new student whose first day at Springtown Intermediate School was Monday, Oct. 6 turned out to be a big ham — literally.

Karrie Barfield, a specialist in SIS’ Public Education Information Management System, said out of all the messages she expected to receive from Principal Joe Brown, “There’s a pig outside,” wasn’t on the list.

“There’s a little strip mall in front of our school, off of Highway 51 and Mr. Brown just sent a message and said there’s a pig behind the store, and I’m like, ‘What?’” Barfield said. “I went outside, and sure enough, there was a pig on top of a dirt hill. First, I thought he was a dog because he was just wagging his tail, walking around, like you could tell he was somebody's pet.”
