“I do not believe in coincidences. And when talking about processing, you go back and realize what actually happened and what could have happened ... I think the Lord knew what was going on — we’re just going to do it like this. Here we are,” Fort Worth Police Officer Sgt. Ryan Nichols said.

Nichols and his wife are Springtown residents who have raised their three children in their hometown since graduating from Springtown High School. After 23 years of marriage and 19 years on the police force, Nichols’ daily routine was pretty much set, but little did he know his quiet morning routine would soon garner nationwide attention.

On the morning of Oct. 23 around 9:30 a.m., Nichols was on his normal patrol route near I-30 and Eastchase Parkway, when he heard fellow FWPD Officer Edwin Bounds call out about a rollover accident on view. Noticing the heavy traffic and realizing he wasn’t too far behind him, he decided to pull over and by the time he got there, Bounds was stepping out of his car.
