Medic to musician: How the military steered Skip Pullig to his career

When his mother died of cancer in April 1984, when he was just 17 years old, Skip Pullig hatched a plan. He’d join the Navy, become a doctor and cure cancer.

“When your mom dies of it, you kind of want to go learn how to make other people not die,” Pullig said.

Parts of that plan worked out for him … just not the parts about becoming a doctor or curing cancer.
