City hosts annual Old Fashioned Christmas parade and Tree Lighting ceremony

On Dec. 7, the city will host its annual Old Fashioned Christmas parade and Tree Lighting ceremony. The parade will begin at 6 p.m., and will end at the square, where Santa Clause — with the help of city council members — will light the Christmas tree. During the event, children can pick up a coloring sheet to participate in the annual coloring contest, with winners announced the following week during Old-Fashioned Christmas on Dec. 13.

The Tree Lighting has been a tradition for many years, but the Christmas parade was introduced by former City Secretary Denise Taylor in 2019, and the event has grown significantly over the years.

“The Springtown Christmas parade and Tree Lighting has been a symbol of small-town charm and a big-hearted holiday spirit. The former city secretary, Denise Taylor, she's the one that started the parade in 2019 — it's been about six years — and then the attendance of last year was huge. We still have a window, and I have so many already in it that are coming. They're coming from all over, at least 30 miles out, to come and participate in the parade. So, I expect it to be a little bit bigger than last year, which is going to be crazy, but it's going to be great,” said Rachele Ortega, the city’s executive assistant/events coordinator.
