Billy George Mayo, 89, of Springtown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025.

A funeral service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 at First Baptist Church in Springtown. Visitation was for one hour prior to the funeral, and interment followed services at Springtown Cemetery.

Billy was born March 23, 1936, in Sulphur Springs to Phillip Thomas Mayo and Verna Ruth (Campbell) Mayo. He grew up in White Settlement, where he attended Brewer High School and proudly served as the school’s first quarterback. His love for athletics continued throughout his life — he went on to play semi-pro football, was a Golden Gloves boxer and coach, an avid fisherman, snow skier, and a devoted supporter of Springtown Porcupine football. Billy also enjoyed coaching peewee football, inspiring younger generations with his love of the game.

Billy and his wife, Martha, left city living behind and embraced the country life he came to love. He made his home in Springtown for 54 years, where he took great pride in farming, gardening, riding his tractor, and raising Chester White and Duroc pigs.

Billy worked as a switchman for Union Pacific Railroad, served as a board member of the local credit union, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served in the United States Army during the Berlin crisis of 1961 and was a member of First Baptist Church in Springtown.

Known for his love of life and time with family, Billy enjoyed dancing “The Push,” playing “42,” and creating memories with those he cherished most.

Billy’s life was full of faith, family, and friendship— a legacy that will continue to live on through all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Ivey; and his son-in-law, Darrell Mathis.

Billy is survived by his loving wife, Martha; daughter, Sheri Mathis; sons, Jerry Mayo, Kelly Mayo and wife Lori, all of Springtown; grandchildren, Mark (Summer) Mathis, Bret (Stephanie) Mathis , Mallory Myers, Chrissy Mayo, Cassie (Roy) Platas, Kelsey (Justin) Sloan, Aspen Mayo, Erin (Zach) Gillean and Hannan (Taylor) McLain; greatgrandchildren, Taylor, Brock, Carli, Brooklyn, Dalton, Kellen, Baylor, Brylie, Jackson, Tatum, Braxton, Ralynn, Leighton, Bristol, Ember, Camden, Davis, Lucas, and Vivian; along with numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends who will deeply miss him.
