Charles was born Feb. 24, 1934, in Weatherford. “Little Henry” was the firstborn son to Henry Marshall Williams and Verona Mae Dodd Williams. He was raised in the community of Springtown. There he attended school and played baseball earning the nickname “Little Babe Ruth.” He graduated from Springtown High School in 1951 then attended Weatherford College for a short time, followed by eight years of service in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic. After returning home from service he met his wife Barbara LaNelle Martin at Howard’s Cafe in Springtown. Shortly after their marriage they relocated to Pottsboro, where Charles began his career as an Animal Damage Control Specialist for the Texas A&M Wildlife Services Division, a career that earned him the nickname “Trapper.” He and Barbara lived in Pottsboro for 10 years where their first three children were born. Later they relocated back to Parker County where they welcomed a fourth child, living and raising their family in Poolville.
Charles worked the majority of his years in the Texas Hill Country — the country that he loved. He retired from the Texas A&M University System in 1999 after 36 years of service. In retirement he enjoyed crafting such as whittling animals and arrowheads out of wood, painting Texas scenery, sitting outside enjoying nature in his swing, working crossword puzzles, watching Texas Rangers baseball and his favorite music programs with Barbara.
He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to support them by attending their various activities.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, most recently Cottondale Church of Christ. His faith in the Lord and love of God’s creation was evident in the life he lived and the things he cherished. He found joy in simplicity and family. He was known to “pick” at the banjo now and then, though he was quite talented at this self-taught art. He grew and worked his vegetable garden every summer to the enjoyment of this family and neighbors. Charles enjoyed teaching others about tracking and trapping, collecting arrowheads, reading about Texas history and geography, wildflowers and native plants. He could identify birds simply by their song and enjoyed feeding and watching them. His faith and love for nature will live on in his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Marshall Williams and Verona Mae Dodd Williams of Springtown; father-in-law, Oliver Windle Martin of Springtown; mother-in-law, Clairis Lesca Auvenshine Martin of Weatherford; brother-in-law, George James; sister-in-law, Helen Martin Robinson; sister-in-law, Diane Floyd Martin; and nephew, Rodney Windle Martin.
Charles is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara LaNelle Martin Williams; and four children, Teresa Lynn Williams Smith of Poolville, Rebecca Lee Williams of Poolville, Franklin Lyle Williams (Jennifer) of Perrin, and Carla Louise Williams Fimbres of Granbury.
