The Parker County EMT program, based in Weatherford, is helping students across the county become eligible for hire immediately after high school by graduating as certified emergency medical technicians.
The program was born out of a need to address the shortage of EMS personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We were really hurting for people,” said Parker County Health District EMS Director Jim Backus. “A lot of people got out of EMS — got out of medicine because they did not want to go through the harshness of COVID. We were losing like five people at a time and in addition to losing personnel and not being able to replace them, people (workers) were getting sick.”
