A collection of handmade quilts preserved at the Springtown Legends Museum offers a glimpse into the city’s early community life, where community gatherings to create quilts served as a social tradition, according to Museum Coordinator Amy Hedges.

Hedges highlighted several historic quilts, many dating from the early 1900s through the 1950s. The pieces reflect a time when store-bought bedding was not readily available, something that prompted residents to come together and craft handmade quilts while also connecting with each other on a social level.

“They would come together, drink their tea, share advice and stitch the quilt together,” Hedges said, describing the gatherings that would bring neighbors together on a weekly basis.
