In honor of Juneteenth, coming up Friday, June 19, Springtown Legends Museum Coordinator Amy Hedges shares local unsung hero Sang Kerby’s story.
Born into slavery in Kentucky, Kerby arrived in Texas with the Kerby family and later gained his freedom while living in the Springtown area.
Though no known photograph of Kerby has been found, Hedges said historical accounts show he and his family became prominent members of the Springtown community during a period when opportunities for formerly enslaved people were often limited.
