Members of the First United Methodist Church of Springtown’s quilting club gather every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to about 2:30 p.m. to hand stitch quilts to be auctioned during the church’s annual Lord’s Acre fall festival in September.
Debbi Bosch, longtime member of the quilting club, said the Lord’s Acre tradition began when farmers set aside an acre of land and dedicated whatever they harvested from it to the church. As fewer people made their living through farming, Bosch said the tradition evolved into donating handmade crafts, baked goods and quilts to support the church.
“You don’t have the acre anymore, but the concept is still there,” Bosch said. “I believe we need to hang on to some traditions. We need to educate people in what it is, so they understand what Lord’s Acre is all about.”
